For Parents

Who will be attending the Tamarside Academy?

All students attending Tamarside Community College School will be guaranteed a place at the Academy and work within Plymouth County Council’s admissions procedures. Any primary pupil who would have gone to Tamarside Community College will also be eligible to attend the Academy.

What will students gain by attending the Academy? The Sponsor wants to create a new school that allows all students to reach their full potential regardless of their background and abilities.

There will be a strong and daily emphasis on respecting yourself and others and on self-discipline. It will be a place that is welcoming, friendly and supportive for staff, students and visitors alike. Parents and carers will be actively encouraged to get involved in school life for their children’s and their own benefit.

Personal achievement as much as national attainment will be important as students will be encouraged to own and manage their successes by setting their own targets and goals in consultation with staff. Students will have many opportunities for accreditation, with academic and vocational qualifications sharing equal status.

The Academy has chosen the dual specialisms of Marine & Future Partnership to offer students a wide range of choices about their future. Both specialisms offer routes into work, apprenticeship and further and higher education. All learning activities will be supported by leading edge Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to ensure that students are equipped to operate successfully in a changing world.

As many people learn best in a practical environment through skills-based approaches, the Academy will offer practical skills alongside functional, creative and academic opportunities. This mix will enable students to thrive in further and higher education, and employment.

We’d like to hear your views on the proposed specialisms and facilities.

What will the Academy offer post-16 students?

The Academy will provide 200 places for post-16 students, offering courses in its specialist subjects of Science and Construction.
