About the Academy

Welcome to the website of the proposed Marine Academy, where you can stay up-to-date with the plans and also send us your comments and ideas on the Academy’s development.

What is an Academy?

Academies are all ability schools which operate independently from the local authority.

Unlike other state schools they enlist the support of sponsors who bring their own expertise to support the school in raising achievement. The Sponsor may also makes an investment of £2m for projects to benefit the students and local community.

Like other schools they follow the National Curriculum in Maths, English, Science and ICT. Each Academy also has its own specialism.

What is being proposed?

The proposal is that the Academy will open in the existing Tamarside Community College buildings in September 2010, with students and staff transferring to the new Academy buildings in 2012.

We welcome your views on these proposals.

Why?

The proposed Academy will provide new opportunities for all students to reach their full potential, regardless of background and abilities. The Sponsors will build on and strengthen the existing Technology specialism and add to it a new Marine specialism, giving students a great mix of academic and vocational choices.

Students will also benefit from a fully-equipped, brand new building which will create a 21st century learning environment for everyone who attends or works at the Academy.

What does it mean if the Academy goes ahead?

Tamarside College would change its status to an Academy from September 2010 and operate for the first school year, in the existing building, before moving into a brand new Academy building on its completion in 2012.

The new Academy will welcome young people of all abilities and will have 900 places for students, aged 11-16. There will also be 200 places for 16-19 year olds.

It will be sponsored by Plymouth University, Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council who are the Local Authority.

The Academy will work hard to raise the aspirations and achievements of young people and positively contribute to the improvements already taking place in North West Plymouth.

Who are the Sponsors?

The lead sponsor for the Marine Academy is the University of Plymouth, who are striving to achieve wider participation of 21st century students from communities who normally do not send students to university. This means establishing sustainable links with the University which may include support for the admission of academy students onto degree courses with allocated places for the Marine Academy students.

There may be agreed tuition fees reduction and bursaries. The sponsors will also look to make use of the endowment funds on an annual basis to identify ways in which targeted funding will help support take up and success to Higher Education. Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council are co-sponsors for the Academy.

They bring a vast array of expertise in raising opportunities and aspiration and are ideally suited to work with the University of Plymouth to enhance the life chances of the Marine Academy students and their families.
